Ultimate
Juggling Club
Grades 7-12. Limit: 20 kids.
Thursdays 6:00-9:00 pm
This is the
most intense, hardworking, and rewarding club in the JUGHEADS line-up.
NEW FOR FALL '05: There will be two main tracks to Ultimate Club membership:
Performance Team and Competition Team. The P.T. will work weekly on polishing
and creating specialty acts for gig performances, while the C.T. will
do extensive juggling drills and exercises for the long-term goal of competing
at the 2006 IJA Festival. We'll remain one club, but have two different
areas of focus after warm-ups each week. (See separate memo detailing
these two teams within the Ultimate Club, most notably a Captains' Camp
in August and non-technical standards which will be more strictly enforced.)
Member rewards
include performing in gigs, potentially earning a varsity letter in juggling
(download EPS/JH Lettering
Form), participating in bonus social events, and traveling to
MadFest in January. See below for a listing of all the standards required
for entrance into this club. Once entrance standards are met, admittance
is contingent on space available and an invitation by Coach Paul.
Ultimate
Club Members are also required to attend a 2nd weekly JH club in addition
to Ultimate Club. Any Rec. or either Elite club are acceptable, but if
High School Club is chosen for their 2nd club day, they must choose the
Fall Pass. NOTE: Ultimate members may attend an alternate club day as
a make-up for absences.
Ultimate
Club runs every Thursday when Edina school is in session.
How can my
child join a JUGHEADS club or camp? Contact Paul (jugheads@comcast.net
or 952.926.0896) or if your child has the director's approval, you can
register online.
Ultimate
Club Membership Standards
Effective September 2007
A standard
may be negotiated with the director/coach if some unique (unofficial)
standard is achieved. The principle for these standards is that Ultimate
Club members need to continually shoot for high goals in order to have
the privilege and responsibility of being in the "varsity" level
JH Club and to continue our tradition of excellence.
EXPERIENCE
STANDARDS
1. One year of experience in a JUGHEADS Elite Club
2. 7th-12th grade
· Younger alternates and members-in-training will be included whenever
possible.
3. Attend a 2nd JUGHEADS Club (Elite, Rec. or High School Club) every
week
TECHNICAL
JUGGLING STANDARDS
(bold standards are those NOT subject to increase)
4. 200 catches
with 5 balls
5. 5 tricks with 5 balls
6. 50 passes each with 8 ball passing
7. 12 catches with 6 balls
8. 7 catches with 7 balls-must be a clean flash with no drops
[Bonus: Qualify]
9. 100 dominant hand throws (DHT) with 4 rings
10. 50 with 7 ring passing
11. 50 with 8 ring passing
12. 100 with 5 rings
[Trick Bonuses: pulldowns, on-off the head, pancakes,
flat reverse]
13. 6 catches with 6 rings-must be a clean flash with no drops
[Bonus: Qualify]
14. 20 categories of 3-club tricks (required with a partner: wrap-arounds
and dropback giveaways)
15. 50 with 6 club ultimate passing (25 each hand, synchronous or asynchronous)
16. 100 with 7 club passing
[Bonuses: 100 w/ 7 club single flips; 10 w/7
club ultimates.]
17. 10 with 7 club back-to-back passing (50 with 6 club back-to-back is
recommended.)
18. 50 with 8 club passing [Bonus: 30 w/ 8 club singles; 10 w/8 club back-to-back]
19. 100 DHT with 4 clubs (Fountain, double-singles or triple-singles)
20. 20 catches with 5 clubs (Drill 3-c. tricks & pyramid)
[BONUS: 50 catches]
21. 20 catches with 5 ball drop bounce
[Bonus: 100 catches, perfectly]
22. One minute with club balance (chin, nose, forehead)
23. Break an all-time JUGHEADS endurance or speed record (solo or team)
· Hint: Make up a new record! Some all-time records may stand for
years, but other records have yet to be invented!
24. Mastery of at least three auxiliary props
Examples: balance board, bull whip, cigar boxes, juggling under a club/object
face balance, devil sticks, diabolo, hat manipulation, plate spinning,
poi/club swinging, shaker cups, stilts, unicycle, walking globe, yo-yo,
etc. "Mastery" means the prop could be incorporated into a specialty
act and/or "Raiders."
25. Break a personal record (endurance or new trick/skill) an average
of every week. Assisting or passing with a fellow member is acceptable.
Juggling weekly at your required 2nd weekly club day is key to achieving
this. Attending camp days virtually guarantees several records per month.
26. Set quarterly and yearly goals in writing-make the most of your years
as an Ultimate Jughead!
27. Own at least 7 beanbags for practice outside of clubs/camps/festivals
PERFORMANCE TEAM-SPECIFIC STANDARDS
28. One (1) performable specialty act for gigs. This could be a solo,
duet, or ensemble.
29. Create or purchase at least one costume for use in your specialty
act(s).
30. Perform at least one formal stage show for a charity event during
the year.
31. Memorize the choreography (and variations) for our common group routines
for gigs. At minimum, these routines are: "Rock This Town,"
"Jailhouse Rock," "Reach," "Stars & Stripes
Forever," and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Larger ensembles
are encouraged to have alternates to substitute for absent members.
32. BONUS PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Perform a technical or artistic solo
with only one prop; perform an auxiliary prop routine; perform a 20-60
minute gig with only 1-4 other Ultimate Jugheads.
COMPETITION
TEAM-SPECIFIC STANDARDS
33. Attend Captain's Camp August 22-26, 2005. (Open to all Ultimate Club
members.)
34. Minimize non-juggling extra-curricular activities so as to maximize
team availability. The C.T. will meet at least twice a week throughout
2005-2006, and five days/week in the summer 2006 leading up to the IJA
Fest.
PERSONAL
CHARACTER STANDARDS
35. Must be a role model to the entire JUGHEADS program: behavior, work
ethic, attitude, helpfulness to the director and others, and ambassadorship
of JUGHEADS on the road for gigs, festivals and social outings.
36. Must commit no fewer than ten (10) hours between September and August
in "juggling community service." Examples: Teaching younger
Jugheads in a Rec. Club or Beginning Camp; performing in charitable gigs.
Like an unpaid internship, these 10 hours may not apply toward earning
tuition for afternoon camps or other clubs. Teaching in a non-JUGHEADS
setting is acceptable but requires approval from the director.
37. Must avoid behavior that would harm the reputation of the individual
or JUGHEADS. Examples: drug/alcohol/tobacco use, violence, sexual impropriety,
theft, cheating.
38. Must maintain grades that reflect academic priority/effort. Guideline:
B (3.0) average.
39. WORK HARD, PLAY HARD. Don't expect to be very social on Thursday nights.
We'll work very hard, but we'll be rewarded by progress and special parties/events
funded by our gigs. Please know that the required time for Thursday rehearsals
is 6:30-8:45; the margin (6-6:30 and 8:45-9) is for arrival/departure.
40. Prioritize our Thursday night rehearsals/workouts. Each Ultimate Jughead
may have three excused absences and two unexcused absence. School music
concerts, with advanced notification to the director, are an example of
an excused absence; any absence without advanced notification to the director
is an unexcused absence. NOTE: If you know that you'll have to miss three
Thursday nights for concerts throughout the year, then you need to keep
healthy and not miss due to illness. If you have occasional family obligations
on Thursday nights, then you may have to skip a sport practice or game
instead of Ultimate Club.
NOTES
- DISCIPLINE:
Members are responsible to read and adhere to the more detailed Ultimate
Club brochure, available in Aug. 2005. Failure to meet and maintain
these standards may result in probation or dismissal from Ultimate Club.
- EXEMPTIONS:
If a standard is not met, the Ultimate Jughead must at least achieve
50% of the standard. As an "exemption," the Jughead must double
two other standards or quadruple one standard. For example, if an Ultimate
Jughead can only flash 6 balls, he or she must achieve 100 with 8 club
passing and 400 with 5 balls, or achieve 40 with 7 club back-to-back
passing. Even with this "exemption," however, the Jughead
is subject to being passed over for membership in favor of other Jugheads
who have met every standard.
- CLOSED
PRACTICES: Only Ultimate Club members (and observing parents) will
be allowed to attend our Thursday night sessions. The director may choose
to invite other Jugheads to rehearse or work out with the team, such
as former members or members-in-training. A punchcard and an invitation
are both required for any such visitors. "Open juggling" will
be generally non-existent, except in the case of Performance Team members
either working on new specialty act material or granted extended specific
skill work at the discretion of the director.

child join a JUGHEADS club or camp? Contact Paul (jugheads@comcast.net
