[Back to Paul's Platform main selection page] January 2000 “Relationships
in JUGHEADS”
It’s difficult to argue that one of the chief purposes of human existence is to be in significant relationships with other human beings. Whatever culture, class, religion or age, people need people. From an infant’s need for a parent’s touch to a senior’s need for a game of cards, the interaction of humans has been a critical key to health and contentment throughout history. Throughout my years at the helm of the WISE GUYS program, I proclaimed in workshops and newsletters that we were “a relationship-based program.” This spirit has carried over to W.G.’s spin-off, JUGHEADS. Kids need each other. They need time to be kids--together. They need interaction with adults besides their parents, and this coach needs to give the love and attention of an uncle who is 110 miles removed from his nearest nieces & nephews. Parents need to meet and know other parents of same-age kids in order to (among other reasons) know that they’re not alone entering (or surviving) the scary era of parenting teenagers. People need people. Perhaps more significant than the juggling, JUGHEADS stands for this very purpose.
