JUGHEADS

[Back to Paul's Platform main selection page] March 2001 “Structure
or Spontaneity”
After school clubs, summer camps, Juggle Jam, MONDO, Madison...lots of scheduling to think about, eh? I, like most Americans, am a schedule-driven person. However, within that schedule, I thrive on a degree of spontaneity. The way I run JUGHEADS is that we have a structure conducive to freedom. While I schedule clubs, camps, our annual show, and special events like clockwork, each of these aspects of our juggling program comes with a high degree of freedom for the participants. Our after school “freedom” is temporarily waning due to our efforts at rehearsing for the Juggle Jam, but I know that we’ll all be rewarded for it. Even with something as ambitious as the show, I try to reinforce in the kids the fun and freedom of our club, and that they’ll get out of the club what they put into it. Such a lesson in self-discipline and delayed gratification is a valuable one indeed.
