JUGHEADS

[Back to Paul's Platform main selection page] October 2001 “Freedom
is not Free”
It’s now been a month since the massacre on September 11. Every American has been affected by this massive terrorist attack in real, daily ways, whether directly or indirectly. Our security is threatened, our economy is threatened, even our lives are threatened. (I’m not paranoid; I’m merely identifying with the victims on 9-11 and our ground troops and pilots currently in and over Afghanistan.) Rest assured, I’m not going to use this friendly neighborhood juggling newsletter to spout off a bunch of partisan views on war and politics. However, a universal truth has re-emerged in recent weeks that should serve as a reminder to every American: freedom is not free. Freedom in America has come at the cost of thousands upon thousands of U.S. colonialists, citizens and soldiers since 1776. That bitter truth has been driven home once again, and if we don’t defend freedom, we will be ruled: by dictators, by mobs, by terrorists, by fear. American ideals are worth fighting for. As much as it depends on me, I will reinforce the ideals of freedom in each member of JUGHEADS. Every day, we have freedom of choice: To reach for goals. To aspire to greatness and nobility. To try, fail, and try again. To succeed. To be compassionate and just and loving. To engage in civil debate. Although we’re sheltered from the war for the time being (God willing that it will not physically touch Minnesota), JUGHEADS will do its part in the war effort. We will not take our feedom for granted. We will use our freedom for good and not evil. We count--and multiply--our blessings by using our freedom as a positive force in Edina, America, and the world.
