10th
grade phenom interviews Paul
EDITORS NOTE: Julian conducted this interview for a school
project and it runs here virtually unedited.
I'm sitting here with Paul Arneberg, the coach of JUGHEADS Youth Juggling
Company. I know that some of you have wanted to see what it would be like
to be Paul for a day, waking up at noon, staying up till the wee hours
of the morning and juggling for a living. That is why I'm doing this interview
to show you that Paul isn't only a juggler, he is a family kind of guy,
and family will always come before juggling to Paul. Paul is also very
religious. He is a Sunday school teacher at his church and is also part
of the church's choir.
J.P.- What are some of your hobbies?
P.A.- Walking, darts, video games, reading, singing, and I would
like to learn how to play the banjo.
J.P.- What is a normal day like for you?
P.A.- I wake up late morning, check e-mail and phone messages,
and prepare any paper work like the newsletter. I try to walk briskly
for an hour a day, during which I stop to do a few pull-ups. I go shopping
for snacks for JUGHEADS about once a week. Every day varies in things
I need to do. I show up to Jugheads between 2:45 and 3:00.
J.P.- What is your family like? Because I know you place
family before juggling.
P.A.- I am the youngest of 5 kids. I have siblings in Miami, Duluth,
Chippewa Falls and Roseville via Tanzania, Africa.
J.P.- How many jugglers are in Jugheads?
P.A.- 105 right now (at time of interview). This counts kids who
come at least once a week, not camp only kids.
J.P.- What is one wish you have for Jugheads in the future?
P.A.- To have other adults who can fill in for me longer-term or
short-notice at clubs and camps if I am ill, take a vacation, or have
a voice-related gig opportunity.
J.P.- How much do you spend on equipment in a year?
P.A.- In 2001, I spent from $9,000 on Jugheads equipment alone
(not including food). However, this includes equipment custom-ordered
by the Jugheads through me.
J.P.- Do you think that Jugheads will ever have their
own space?
P.A.- I dream of it, but realistically it would have to be outside
of Edina because not many buildings are for sale with high enough ceilings.
(Then theres the cost of the building itself!)
