WHEN:  January 18-20, 2019 (three full days!)

WHAT:  MadFest is a regional juggling festival about as old as Minnesota’s own MONDO Fest (circa 1990). Led by the Madison Area Jugglers (, MadFest is one of the biggest and most beloved juggling festivals in the country. 20 of our current higher-level Jugheads went to MadFest last year, eight of whom have also attended an IJA Festival with us (plus several more with MONDO experience), so they know what to expect. For us, MadFest is the closest thing to the big IJA Festival (yet less than half as long and less than 25% of the cost).  It’s a memorable and effective three-day mid-winter boost in juggling skills and bonding as fellow Jugheads!

WHERE:  Locations for MadFest 2019 are still being finalized, but typically the Friday night session is held at a Madison circus space or middle school and the venue for Saturday & Sunday is a different location such as a local middle/high school or college. The MadFest Juggling Extravaganza (public show) is at 7 pm on Saturday night at the Barrymore Theatre, 2090 Atwood Ave., Madison, WI, 53704.  Our hotel is downtown (see Itinerary).

WHO: MadFest attracts hundreds of jugglers from around the nation. Our team trip is designed for Ultimate/Elite/Advanced members (6th grade minimum), offered as a privilege for high levels of commitment and as an encouragement of further team bonding and skill-building. Our annual group consists of 25-35 kids registering first-come, first-served (and by our deadline for hotel confirmation). Jugheads motivated and working every week at club will love the camaraderie and extra time to juggle. Caution:  Jugheads going merely to hang out and stay up late (at the expense of our structured juggling & social highlights) will waste time and money. ITINERARY/FRIDAY’S STAGGERED DEPARTURE:  Friday: The majority of the group (usually about 75%) will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Utley Park in Edina (across from St. Stephen’s) and leave as soon as vehicles are loaded with luggage and kids. At least Captain Kirk’s vehicle will leave at 3:45 p.m., likely also from Utley Park (mark your preference on your form if choosing to depart at 3:45). After leisurely stops at the Woodbury Kowalski’s and for lunch in Tomah, the early group will spend time at our 4th year hotel (Hampton Inn & Suites–Downtown • 440 West Johnson Street • Madison, WI 53703 ) before going to an early dinner and arriving at MadFest around 6:30 p.m. Saturday: We’ll juggle all day (like MONDO) then go to the public show at night. Sunday: Sleep in, breakfast; MadFest Games; leave at 4:30 p.m.; home by 10 p.m. Edina Public schools are not in session on Friday, Jan. 18, and no public schools are in session on Mon., Jan. 21 (recovery/homework day J).

CHAPERONES: Paul & Wendy Arneberg will lead the trip. Experienced parents “Captain Kirk” & Michele Dunbar (on their 7h and 6th trips!) and George & Susan Hadjiyanis (2nd year MadFest parents) have volunteered to drive/chaperone! We’ll cover their mileage expenses, Saturday’s dinner & show, and a portion of hotel expenses (depending on budget).  If interested in chaperoning and/or driving for future trips, contact Wendy.

COST:  $275* + food money. This covers transportation, hotel (with a buffet breakfast each morning), Saturday’s group pizza dinner & public show, and JH tuition. Each Jughead should also bring about $75 cash/debit card for weekend food (4-5 meals + snacks). This trip is like an IJA Festival, only with more proportional free time and a LOT cheaper (»half the daily $).  Please register and pay $275 by Sat., 12/8; you may make installment payments upon request. (We’re obligated to confirm with our hotel by 12/12, thus the early financial commitment.)

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  Saturday, December 8, 2018.  You’ll receive a packet on Mon., Jan. 14, 2019.

REQUIRED 1ST-TIMERS’ MEETING:  On Monday, Jan. 14, we’ll have a short meeting from 6:15-6:45 p.m. in the Commons at St. Stephen’s Church. This Jan. 14 meeting is required for first-time MadFest attenders in order to introduce our first-time traveling Jugheads to our Code of Conduct, MadFest road & room assignments, and the itinerary. (If requested, Paul will offer an alternate meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 6:15-6:45.)
